Oak coffee tables are the standard type of wooden coffee table. Lasting durability is one of the important aspects in a piece of furniture, and oak wood is sturdy and resilient, which ensures that furniture made of oak wood will be lasting and durable. Oak wood also has a very beautiful wood grain, which makes for an attractive surface on furniture. The combination of the strength and beauty of furniture made of oak wood equals an aesthetically classic piece made of strong wood which will stand the test of time.
Though there is the standard rectangular oak coffee table, there are many variations of this type of table to suit every design need and which agree with different personal tastes. First of all, the shape of the table depends on how the rest of the room will look around the table. If the room is composed of square backed seating, rectangular carpets, roman shades, and angular furniture, a square oak coffee table will naturally look appropriate in the room. However, if the room is decorated with rounded back chairs, oval carpets, and curving draperies, a round oak coffee table would be more consistent with the flowing lines in the room.
Another aspect to consider when adding an oak table to the room is whether the room would look best with a light oak table, an oak table with a medium stain or a dark oak coffee table. Light oak is very pale in color, and without a stain it can look almost white. While this type of oak table would look wonderful in a light filled and rather casual living space, it would look completely out of place serving as a table in a formal or darker living area. For a room which has a medium intensity color palette, a medium stain on an oak table can bring some warmth to the room. Dark oak tables can be stained so that they look as if they are the color of dark chocolate. In a living room or den which is upholstered and draped with darker and opulent fabrics, including an oak table made of dark oak would look much more cohesive. In a living space with furniture upholstered in light colors, a dark oak table can tone down the room. Because the color of dark oak is so rich, the contrast between light and dark colors does not look harsh.
